Ranking first stopped meaning getting the visit
For most of the last decade, SEO had one job: move up the page. That worked because the top of the page was where the links were. It is not where the links are any more.
A result page today answers the question before it offers you anywhere to click. Understanding what now sits above an organic listing is the difference between work that produces traffic and work that produces a good-looking rankings report.
What a result page looks like now
Everything that sits above position one
A commercial search in a competitive category. Each band is something a searcher reads, clicks or gets their answer from before an organic result appears.
The AI Overview answers it
Often several hundred words, drawn from pages it cites. A searcher whose question is answered has no reason to continue.
Paid sits above everything organic
Two to four listings on commercial terms, and they look increasingly like organic results.
The local pack takes the intent
Three businesses with ratings and a map. On any query with local intent it absorbs most of the remaining clicks.
Second place is below the fold
Ranking second on a page like this means a searcher has to scroll past an answer, four adverts, three businesses and a question box to reach you. Most never do.
What this does to the numbers
Why a page can rank well and still go quiet
The pattern shows up the same way on nearly every site we audit. Impressions hold steady or rise, position holds or improves, and clicks fall anyway. Nothing has gone wrong with the page. The result is simply being read rather than clicked.
Which is why a rankings report on its own is close to useless now. The questions worth asking are whether you appear in the answer at the top, whether your result gives anyone a reason to click past it, and whether the queries you win have any commercial intent at all. Plenty of sites hold strong positions on terms that were never going to produce a customer.
The uncomfortable version, said plainly
If an agency shows you improved average position as the headline result, ask what happened to clicks over the same period. The two have come apart, and anyone still reporting the first as a proxy for the second either has not noticed or is relying on you not to.
We report impressions, position, clicks and click-through rate together, segmented so that informational queries with no buying intent do not flatter the total. When a page ranks and does not earn clicks, we would rather tell you why than show you the position.
What the work consists of
Four things, in this order
Order matters more than breadth. Content published on a site with technical problems, or authority built toward pages that cannot convert, both waste the budget.
Technical and structure
Crawlability, speed, duplicate and competing pages, heading structure, internal links. Unglamorous, and it caps everything above it. Two pages competing for the same query is the most common finding and the cheapest fix.
Content that answers, not content that targets
Pages written around what someone actually needs to decide, in the words they use. That also happens to be what gets extracted and cited by answer engines, which keyword-stuffed copy never is.
Being present in the answer
Structured data, question and answer content, and claims specific enough to quote. If the overview at the top is going to answer the question regardless, the useful outcome is that it answers using you and names you.
Authority, which means other sites
Referring domains remain the hardest constraint to move and the one most proposals quietly skip. A technically clean, well-written site with very few linking domains will sit on page two more or less indefinitely, and no amount of on-page work changes that.
How you will know it is working
What we actually report
Four numbers per page, every month, alongside what changed and what it was meant to do. Impressions tell you whether Google is showing the page at all. Position tells you where. Click-through rate tells you whether the result earns the visit. Clicks tell you what you got. Any one of them read alone will mislead you, which is precisely why most reporting uses one.
On top of that, which queries you appear in answer panels for, and whether you are named when you do. That is becoming the measure that matters, and it is not in a standard rankings report.

Frequently Asked Question on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
How long does SEO take to show results?
Most SEO campaigns show measurable movement within the first quarter, with meaningful page-rank improvement at six to eight months. The timeline depends on domain age, existing backlink profile and keyword competitiveness. A new domain in a competitive category sits at the longer end of that range, while an established site fixing technical issues often sees gains sooner.
What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?
On-page SEO covers everything on the website itself: page titles, headings, content quality, internal linking, structured data and site speed. Off-page SEO covers signals from elsewhere, primarily backlinks from other domains, brand mentions and citations. On-page work is fully within your control and usually delivers faster results; off-page work compounds more slowly but is harder for competitors to replicate.
Is SEO still worth it now that AI answers questions directly?
Yes, but the goal has shifted. Traditional SEO optimises for ranking positions; answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews optimise for citation. Both draw on the same foundations – crawlable content, clear structure, structured data and topical authority – so SEO work still pays. What changes is that content now needs self-contained, directly quotable answers rather than long prose that buries the point.
Does UberBrains use white-hat SEO only?
Yes. UberBrains uses white-hat techniques exclusively — no black-hat methods, no keyword stuffing, no purchased link schemes. We build strategies per client rather than applying a one-size-fits-all template. Black-hat shortcuts can produce short-term ranking movement but carry a real risk of manual penalties that take far longer to recover from than the gains were worth.
What does an SEO retainer include?
An UberBrains SEO engagement covers technical auditing, on-page optimisation, keyword and content strategy, and ongoing measurement. Scope is set by the problem the business is facing rather than a fixed package, so the work varies by site. Engagements run for a minimum of six months because SEO results take six to eight months to materialise, and are billed quarterly.
How is SEO performance measured?
SEO performance is measured on organic sessions, keyword position movement for target terms, pages indexed, and conversions attributed to organic traffic. Ranking position alone is a weak measure in isolation – a first-page position on a term nobody converts from is worth less than a mid-page position on a high-intent term. Reporting will show ranking movement to pipeline, not just visibility.
How much does SEO cost in India?
SEO in India is sold as a monthly retainer. Single-location work runs roughly ₹8,000–20,000 a month covering 5–15 keywords; small-business programmes ₹20,000–60,000 covering 15–30 keywords; mid-market and funded-startup work ₹50,000–1,50,000, scoped by topic clusters rather than keyword counts. Keyword difficulty, industry and competition decide where a project sits. Minimum engagement is six months.
Can an India-based agency run SEO for US, UK or Gulf markets?
Yes, provided the strategy is built for the target country rather than translated from an India-first plan. Search results differ by country, so keyword research, competitor sets and search intent all need rebuilding per market. Technically, it requires correct hreflang and country targeting, region-appropriate currency, spelling and contact details, and a link profile built from sites that are actually visible in that market. Reporting should be segmented by country, since a blended organic number hides which market is working. UberBrains runs SEO across India, North America, EU, UK, Gulf, Australia, and New Zealand markets.
How much does international SEO cost?
International SEO in India is typically quoted at $700 to $3,000+ per month, above domestic retainers because the work multiplies per market. Each country needs its own keyword research, content, link building and reporting, and the technical layer – hreflang, country targeting, site structure – has to be built once and maintained. Two markets is not twice the cost of one, but it is meaningfully more than a single-market programme.
